U8s Blackbrook v Clock Face 20/09/09

Clock made the short trip to Boardman's Lane for their toughest test of the season so far.

Opening the game in defence Clock Face soon realised that Blackbrook posed a major threat in the form of their pacy attack out wide.As a result of their speed on the flanks Brook surged into an early 3-0 lead. Despite courageous carries with the ball in hand from Tom Yates, Isaac Poole, Kieran Wilson & Mark Dearden Clock could not break the aggresive home defence.

Mid-way through the opening half debutant Josh O'Connell took the Brook defence on & with a jinking run forced his way over to open the visitors account. In reply Blackbrook crossed the Clock Face line on a further 3 occasions. Shortly before half time Josh Morgan cut through the Brook line with pace to pull a try back for Clock. The opening period concluded with Brook scoring once more to leave the half time score at 7-2 to the home team.

The second stanza saw Clock make several changes in personnel including debuts for Owen Lambeth & Tyler Heaton.

With increased determiination in defence Clock held a continually strong running Brook side out for the opening minutes of the half. However the experience & development of the home team eventually became too much for the younger & greener visiting team, with Brook crossing for a further 3 unanswered tries.

Liam Ellam, Aaron Ford, Aaron Rigby, Shaun Cunliffe & Owen Lambeth continued to manfully take the game to the opposition with hard driving runs. Following an intelligent off load in the tackle by Shane Leadbetter, Tyler Heaton darted over the try line for Clock.

Blackbrook then closed the game out with 2 more tries as the effect of tackling a much bigger side began to show on the Clock Face team. Brook ran out victors 12-3.

A big congratulations to Clock Face for showing a determined effort to contest the game to the death against a physical and organised Brook team. Particular mentions for praise to Owen Lambeth, Tyler Heaton, Joe Maleedy & Shaun Cunliffe who all competed brilliant whilst against older players.

U8s Atherton Dragons v Clock Face 13/09/09

Clock Face maintained their impressive start to the season with a hard fought victory on the road at Atherton.

Starting the game with ball in hand, Clock's speed at the ruck allowed them to pressure the opposition's line with Kaylea Costello darting over.Atherton attacked strongly in the following set & levelled the scores. The first half then followed a pattern of both teams trading scores to go in at the break level 4-4.Clock's three other first half tries came via Shane Leadbetter's elusive footwork, Kieran Wilson's alertness to dive over from acting half back & Kaylea Costello's pace out wide.

A significantly more robust effort in defence was immediately noticeable in the second half. With Clock Face forcing Atherton into touch on several occassions as they defended their line manfully.Particular mentions must go to Jack Roberts, Shane Leadbetter, Shaun Cunliffe, Isaac Poole, Josh Morgan & Kieran Wilson whose line speed pressured the Atherton attack on each carry.

After a surging run down field from Aaron Ford, Jack Roberts awareness enabled him to scoot over for a try.The Dragons responded positively to level the scores once more.A brief stalemate followed with both teams raising their standards in defence. This deadlock was broken when Mark Dearden side stepped his way into space on the left flank & sprinted away for a try.Once more the opposition showed their determination to compete by crossing the Clock line.

With only minutes remaining in the game, a bullocking run by Tom Yates from inside his own half, saw him break clear & edge Clock Face in front again 7-6.Despite valiant attempts in their remaining two sets Atherton could not draw level as aggresive Clock Face tackling repelled them on each drive.

Very well done Clock, another major confidence boost & more importantly a progressive performance.Keep up the development!!!!

M.O.M - Shane Leadbetter
